Mandan: The research site is located at the USDA-ARS Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory’s south station approximately 5 km south of Mandan, North Dakota, USA. The site is on gently rolling upland and is dominated by well-drained Temvik-Wilton silt loam soil.

Dickinson: The Dickinson Research Extension Center site is located in western North Dakota (Dunn County-Section 19-143-96). Established in 2011, the 10-year study site consists of a 5-crop diverse rotation (spring wheat, 7-species cover crop, corn, field pea-barley, and sunflower) compared to continuous spring wheat. There are 18-1.74 ha fields and there are 3 field blocks established on major soil types.
